If saving weight and having the latest technology are important factors in your battery selection, then have a look at Lithium Iron phosphate cell (LiFePO4) batteries. Shorai Power is one company that make these newish bike batteries. Replacing the traditional Lead-Acid battery, the Lithium Iron battery is generally smaller than your bike’s stock battery, is considerably less in weight and rather durable as the battery cells are wrapped in a “military spec carbon composite case.” Other benefits include low self-discharge rates as they do not sulfate (degrade while not in use) and don’t contain acid. One negative is price as Lithium Iron batteries are generally more expensive than AGM, GEL and conventional ‘Wet’ Lead-Acid batteries.
